Blog #17 Health issues and Eating Disorders

Good day cadets.  As we learn more about health, we find out that there are more issues that come into play with our body than just losing weight.  Weight loss can become an obsession or a disease.  My post today is about Karen Carpenter.  She was a fabulous voice of the Carpenters Duo and have numerous hits during the 70's but unfortunately she was stricken with Anorexia as a young adult and because of this, her body was ravaged by the weight loss and it took her life due to health issues.  Here is an article on NPR that highlights her story both medically and musically.  I hope you enjoy this story and learn from her issues and mistakes. Please post your own article or story that is related to a person of interest in the news that is health related. Be sure to give a brief synopsis as always and comment on other cadet's work.  Good luck and I hope you learn more about these diseases.

  1. Very interesting blog!
To start off, Karen Carpenter is a very lovely singer. She did not deserve to leave the world. More importantly, her situation could have been prevented or solved which would not have led to the disease and she may still be singing with her brother today.
Her situation reminds me of obesity caused by bulling. Like the website explained, with the negative influence from others, it affects us and causes us to change the way we are and looks to fit the requirement of others. For example, to lose weight or to be/ act a certain way to people. Not only can bulling cause diseases but as well as depression and no one should ever go through that. In the website, it also saids

"Bullying can have serious consequences, including body image dissatisfaction, low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, obesity, anorexia, bulimia, drug abuse, mental disorders and thinking about and attempting suicide. These symptoms are equally common among the bullies and the bullied victims."

So why bully if it can affect both parties?

May bullying stop and other causes to eating disorders or diseases that could be prevented come to an end.

"They do not have a solid sense of self and are very susceptible to thinking they should look like the models, even if they are airbrushed and really only fantasy. "
(The airbrush part was good!) :)

In the article that I read, I learned about a young woman named Eliana Ramos, who unfortunately fell victim to anorexia and passed away. The article explains how quickly and effectively eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa can consume a person's body and leave them completely emaciated. I became very angry at certain parts of the article because they showed how Eliana's boss (she was a model) refused to set a minimum BMI check on the models to prevent eating disorder deaths and went on to say that her death was "genetic" and had nothing to do with the fashion shows. Low self-esteem, depression, extreme weakness, and an inability to look at oneself in the mirror with satisfaction are all the effects of eating disorders and these are the effects that thousands of other people like Eliana face.

    2. This is such a sick and sad story to read. This should not happen and it is nasty to see how young ladies would risk and even die just to fit to requirements of others like what Abdul said. The sisters are so very young and have a nice life ahead of them and many others who suffered from anorexia. Isabelle Caro is a good example. Luckily she is alive but does she regret what she have done to herself? Some people suffer from obesity and some suffer from anorexia, and theres some who take what they have including health for granted.
Good job Abdul and may we all including myself not take what we have for granted, our life, happiness, health, family and friends.

    3. Excellent job. I see that you worked really hard. I agree with Nicole this is really sad and I think this is a huge problem in america especially with the ladies. Many ladies want to loose weight and become skinny, like me. Nicole to answer your question Isabelle Caro did regret for what she did

  4. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/26/celebrity-health-crises-2012_n_2303495.html This article talks about how 10 celebrity are having health problems. Like " Nick Cannon faced a number of health scares in 2012, including kidney problems and blood clots in his lungs. After stepping down from his radio show to focus on his health, he revealed that he was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease lupus and a related kidney disorder called lupus nephritis." But he is healthier now getting more sleep in his system and eating right

In this article they talk about Paula Abdul, she is a dancer, choreograph and singer (American Idol Judge) battled bulimia and decided to check herself in a clinic, back in 1994. Her negative feelings about her own body image came as early as seven years old when she began dancing, but "it didn't manifest into a full-blown eating disorder until I was in high school." Today Paula Abdul is a spokesperson for the National Eating Disorders Association. Paula courageously speaks out about her own past battles, in hopes of encouraging young women to take the scary, but necessary, steps to seek help. "It is one of the toughest things to talk about, bar none, and it is one of the hardest disorders to deal with because it's not black or white. Eating disorders really have nothing to do with food, it's about feelings."

  6. Hello this is kind of of off topic but I was wanting to know if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML.
I'm starting a blog soon but have no coding knowledge so I wanted to get advice from someone with experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This site provides a lot of tips to weight loss. I have tried a majority of these tips and they really do work. I feel that instead of trying random diets, it is best to listen to a professional.

    1. Cadet, you should ask your Mom what sites she went to for her information on dieting and post them to our blog site. I am glad that you look up to your mom but remember that when you are referring to yourself, I is always capitalized. Take care and see you in class.
