ReplyDeleteBees are important not just because of biodiversity but because bees specifically are crucial to food crops as they pollinate a large portion of what we consume. They also make honey which is very delicious (and lasts forever mind you). Bees started dying for a while now but now it has been posed as a problem as they are starting to become at risk. Governments should be establishing and enforcing laws to protect bees if not helping them to minimize bee fatalities.

While I agree that bees should be protected, I don't think that laws are the proper measure to take at the moment. First of all, no definite cause is known yet, so the laws to be made would be too vague to be enforced properly.
DeleteI agree I think the government should be enforcing a law to protect bees or at least try coming up with something that wont cause harm

ReplyDeleteAlthough it is atypical for bees to become such a sensational topic, it should be taken into account that they are responsible for a significant amount of the world's food surplus. Hence, the spontaneous death of numerous honeybees all over the United States is yielding concern from the public. While the main reason is yet to be known, the theories proposed all point to humans as the cause. Realistically speaking, the mass will not even make an effort to contribute to somewhat keep the honeybee collapse at bay. It is only until the negative effects are prominent that they will start taking action. In order to counter this, beekeepers should avoid exposing honeybees to parasites and harmful chemicals.

I agree with you because its more then noticeable that none of us are huge fans of bees but with massive reports of decreasing population we all have to take initiative since they compose a huge part of our lives whether we want to accept it or not.

DeleteAlthough Guiveses mentioned that preventing bees from being exposed to chemicals and parasites, that isn't always possible. According to the video, there are many factors that contribute to CCD, both parasites and chemicals are simply some of the many things scientists think to be causing CCD. While parasites and other pathogens are somewhat out of our control, we should instead focus on decreasing the amount of stress the bees are experiencing. This stress is the root cause of the bees being vulnerable to the diseases in the first place. If the bees have a strong immune system, then they can handle the diseases better. I do agree something should be done, I think that decreasing the bees' stress is more in our control.

ReplyDeleteBees affect our food supply. They pollinate about 80% of our plants. Without the pollination that is given to our plants that would cut off a big part of our food suply. I agree with the most part beekeepers should be spraying these chemicals to keep our crops safe. But i dont think its a safe substance for the bees. I think beekeepers should trying coming up with something to wont harm bees this would be a negative affect on us.

I agree, the government should be working on finding a way to protect the bees. Without the bees how would farmers grow without the help of pollination?
DeleteBees as Phill sates pollinate just about all of Earths plant life. Without bees all of our food would shrivel up and die. I believe we should start taking measures to save the bees. We cant waddle around it like we do with global warming. If bees were going extinct I think mankind would do everything they could to stop it unlike Guiveses. http://www.mnn.com/local-reports/pennsylvania/local-blog/the-importance-of-honeybees SantosP8

ReplyDeleteFor many people, thoughts of bees are often dominated by swarms of small yellow and black “bugs” that live in hives, make honey, and attack with a painful sting. However they are very important to our society. It is estimated that in North America around 30% of the food humans consume is produced from bee pollinated plant life. The value of pollination by bees is estimated around $16 billion in the US alone. We would be unable to enjoy most of our favorite fruits, vegetables, or nuts without these pollinators. Bees also pollinate crops such as clover and alfalfa that cattle feed on, making bees important to our production and consumption of meat and dairy. Honey production from around 135 thousand American beekeepers caring for approximately 2.44 million colonies totaled almost 148.5 million pounds in 2007. Therefore bees should be protected by the goverment instead of people trying to kill them. Honey is also a natural and healthy sweetener. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8015136.stm

ReplyDeleteI agree with you because bees have a mutual exchange with us if we don't harm them. They give us honey and we give them flowers Which they get pollen. It is wrong to kill bees for honey because the population will go down and upset the food chain.

ReplyDeleteGrowing up it was pretty much obvious that the majority of people, whether you are young or old, despised bees. I myself would see one and find myself walking the opposite direction. Watching this video gave me a new perspective on it though, something I would have never imagined. A great percentage of fruits we eat come from the infamous bees. Now imagine this, not being able to enjoy your fruits, vegetables and such because of the colony collapse disorder. A great number of people have took a giant step to try and saving them, buying exceptional numbers of those bees. Although what America is afraid of is not the future extinction of bees but the soon to be none bee keepers.

ReplyDeleteBees are part of an important lifestyle to us. Bees provide us honey and freshen flowers and we give them the flowers for honey to extend their species. But why are humans spraying chemicals and toxic equipments on them? If the bee species die out, the food web will be upset. Without bees, flowers won't get pollinated, those who prey on bees, will die out etc. We have already made our move on saving bees, The Bee Movie, but yet in some places, people don't bother to watch or care. They continuously kill bees. What good does that do? The government should be protecting bees and preserving nature at all cost, because then without it, human species will be doomed to not survive.

ReplyDeleteI remember as a little girl I didn't like bees, I thought they had no purpose in our society they were just there. But now that i have see this video it has changed my mind. Bees are actually a big part in our society and our national food supply. Bees provide us with our favorite foods and with out bees we won't be able to eat those foods. 400 beehives had been alive and thriving, now they were suddenly dead and empty. The bees had vanished. Know one had a clue to what was happening scientists believe it might have been a pathogen or parasite but they weren't quite sure. This problem was going national all over America our bees where disappearing know knew what was going on. Bees were in every ones conversations and minds know one really appriciated the bees until they where gone.
http://retroreport.org/the-mystery-of-the-missing-bees/
This was a very informative video on the mysterious disappearance of bees. It cleared up the confusion I had about this topic. Bees are amazing little creatures who are significantly under appreciated. Everyone should be aware that bees assist make every fruit and vegetable possible. In addition, they are the only source of honey, and we should protect them to the best of our ability. Also, they are and important part of our ecosystems. Without bees a little more of the world will be put into unbalance.

Throughout my younger years,i neglected bees in the positive light they deserved but rather viewed them as tiny evil useless creatures. This video enlightened me on the many purposes bees serve. Until seeing this video i had no idea there was a problem within the bee community, as well as many bee hives being kept in NYC rooftops and central park. Beekeeping seems like a very interesting and simple hobby, life, however that is if you could get past the millions of bees around you and the buzzing. It is important that bees are kept alive and well in population, it is a necessity that people become aware of the bees and how they are a great part of our vegetation.
